Independent Iranian Unions: “Don’t use violence against people struggling to survive!”

On January 5th, independent trade unions in Iran issued a statement in support of the mass protests against austerity and dictatorship that began at the end of last year. The statement was issued in the name of the Tehran Public Transport Workers Union and the Haft Tapeh Agro-industry Workers Union in Khuzestan province. Both unions have been involved in recent struggles and have suffered repression. Reza Shahabi, a leader of the Tehran bus workers, has been a target for persecution since 2010, served a 6 year jail term and now has been imprisoned again since August, last year.

South Cyprus: Guaranteed Minimum Income: Another insult to our intelligence

by M. Karpasia, translation Theo Ieronimides

Amid scandals involving millions, bribes, corruption and abuse of power (Mayor of Paphos, Vergas, Sewerage Board of Paphos, Cyprus Airways and the involvement of the President’s Law Office, the fiasco regarding the appointment of central Bank Governor,  Mrs Giorkatzi etc.), luxurious brothels, plump payments to those «responsible» for our ‘wellbeing” (ministers, members of parliament, foreign consultants who carry out reports for us, bank officials etc.), we are still waiting for the social net of solidarity and protection for our distressed fellow citizens which they named Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI).

Belgium: Massive general strike makes the government wobble

Towards a second plan of action to get rid of this government and austerity!

PSL/LSP (CWI in Belgium) reporter

The general strike of 15 December in Belgium was phenomenal. The united call of all three trade union centres illustrated the power of the working class movement. We made the government wobble, but it will need an extra push to fall. The strike showed the potential to end all austerity policies. The solidarity, but also the movement’s passive support, continues to grow. The challenge is now to mobilise this support in a second action plan with bigger and harder protest, leading to a 48-hour general strike.

FERGUSON: Build a new Black Freedom movement

By Chris Gray  (Socialist Alternative -CWI USA)

The prospect of a new Black freedom movement has been raised through nearly three months of heroic protests by the youth of Ferguson. Like the murder of Emmett Till in 1955, which helped spark the Civil Rights Movement, Mike Brown’s murder symbolizes the systematic violence and oppression faced by millions of people of color in our society.
